Maybe You Should Stop Reading

Action vs. Planning

I believe there is a point of diminishing returns in your studies. 

At some point you have to start doing.

I've read hundreds of books that outline the author's secret sauce. The methods that they used to find success in their career. 

I like the idea of experimenting with a ton of strategies and seeing what sticks with you. This is why I've recommended "Tools of Titans" by Tim Ferriss so many times. It's a book filled with short interviews with a ton of HSPs (Highly Successful People). You can breeze through it while playing around with your morning routine, toying with your diet or tinkering with your sleep schedule all based on the advice from these HSPs.

Lately though, I've been having the urge to stop reading.

It takes up a lot of time and quite frankly, I believe I know enough at this point to make good decisions. 

Reading more is counterproductive now. 

The cost vs. benefit no longer sways in favor of books.

Sure, there is plenty more to learn but there is more to be gained from action. 

It's similar to "laying the foundation" or spending too much time "planning." I call this "working for work's sake" (I ironically learned that phrase from a book 🤐). While this stuff is important, these tasks can EASILY fool you into believing you're doing the right work when you're really just putting off the stuff that makes you uncomfortable. 

Usually, when I consult with our club members, it's the actions that are missing.

I posted this on Instagram recently. I work with hundreds of personal trainers and strength and conditioning coaches every single day. They are brilliant in the field of exercise science. True experts in the field. The chasm isn't created by a lack of advanced exercise science. It's created by a lack of action.

This is true in every industry. I talked with a friend this weekend about the field of orthopedic surgery and how so many "less than great" surgeons are dominating because of their business savvy and interpersonal skillsets.

You should think objectively about what skills you need to develop.

Be honest with yourself. I know it can be hard to see the cold, hard truth but true honesty is the start of something great.

Where do you stand on this scale? 

Do you have a lot more to learn?

Or are you avoiding action by fooling yourself into thinking reading is what you need to do?
